Writing effective Skills

Better prompts, better replies.

A Skill's system prompt is the single biggest lever you have over how the AI replies. These best practices are drawn from Apple's Foundation Models documentation and Anthropic's prompt engineering guide — adapted for AI Reply Assistant's messaging context.

Be clear and direct

Write short, specific instructions. Tell the AI exactly what you want — don't hint or imply. If a colleague reading your prompt would be confused, the AI will be too.

Do

You are a concise, professional assistant. Reply in 1–2 sentences using a warm but businesslike tone.

Don't

Be kinda professional but also friendly, you know? Just make it sound good and not too long or short.

Give the AI a role and persona

Start with "You are..." to set the role (what the AI does) and persona (how it behaves). This focuses the tone and vocabulary of every reply.

Do

You are a customer-support specialist who is patient, empathetic, and solution-focused.

Don't

Help me reply to messages nicely.

Say what to do, not what to avoid

Positive instructions ("use casual language") are more reliable than negative ones ("don't be formal"). The AI follows what you ask for better than what you tell it to avoid.

Do

Use short, casual sentences. Address the person by their first name.

Don't

Don't be too formal. Don't use long sentences. Don't forget their name.

Keep it short for Apple Intelligence

Apple's on-device model has a smaller context window. Keep your system prompt concise — a few focused sentences outperform a wall of text. Save longer, more detailed prompts for Claude.

Do

You are a friendly travel advisor. Suggest one practical option and keep replies under three sentences.

Don't

You are a world-class travel consultant with 20 years of experience across 50 countries who specialises in luxury, budget, adventure, and family travel, and you should always consider dietary restrictions, accessibility needs, time zones, visa requirements...

Use examples to show, not just tell

Give the AI one or two example replies so it can see the format, length, and style you want. This is one of the most reliable ways to steer output.

Do

Example reply: "Thanks for checking in! I'm free Thursday after 3 — want to grab coffee at the usual place?"

Don't

Reply in a natural way that sounds human.

Match your prompt's tone to the desired output

If you write your prompt in a casual, upbeat voice, the AI mirrors that energy. If your prompt is stiff and formal, the replies will be too. Write the way you want the AI to sound.

Do

Keep it breezy and fun — like texting your best mate. Throw in the occasional emoji.

Don't

The assistant shall generate responses that are informal in nature and may optionally include emoji characters.

Explain the context or purpose

Telling the AI why you need a certain style helps it generalise better. A short reason is more effective than a rigid rule.

Do

Keep replies under two sentences — the recipient reads on a small screen and skims quickly.

Don't

Maximum 2 sentences.

Let tone sliders do the heavy lifting

AI Reply Assistant's five tone sliders (creativity, formality, directness, empathy, length) automatically adjust the prompt behind the scenes. Don't re-explain what a slider already covers — focus your system prompt on unique details the sliders can't express, like domain knowledge, jargon, or relationship context.

Do

You know the recipient is a first-generation university student — celebrate their wins without being patronising.

Don't

Be moderately formal, fairly empathetic, somewhat creative, and medium length.

Quick-start template

Not sure where to begin? Start with this and customise from there:

You are a [role] who [persona]. Reply in [length] using a [tone] voice. [One unique detail about the recipient or context.]

Example: “You are a supportive running coach who celebrates small wins. Reply in 1–2 sentences using an encouraging voice. The recipient just started training for their first 5K.”

FilesOn-device

Search and read files from locations you grant access to. Supports PDF, DOCX, TXT, and other common formats. Also integrates with the Files API, which lets you upload and manage files without re-uploading content with each request — upload once and reference across multiple conversations.

Local file reads stay on-device. Files API uploads are sent directly to Anthropic — no Flowbie servers in between.

Generated entirely on-device by Apple Intelligence.

Document CreationOn-device

Agent SkillsCloud

Modular capabilities that extend Claude's functionality. Pre-built Agent Skills let Claude run code in a sandboxed container to generate professional documents: PowerPoint presentations (.pptx), Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx), PDF reports (.pdf), and Word documents (.docx) — downloaded automatically and presented as previewable, shareable file cards.

Files are generated in Anthropic's code execution container using your API key. The finished document is downloaded to your device — no Flowbie servers involved.

How it works

  • Enable up to 5 tools per Skill in the Skill editor. Knowledge Base and URL Fetcher auto-enable and do not count toward the limit.
  • Tools that need iOS permissions (Calendar, Contacts, Location, Photos, Reminders) prompt for access the first time they are used.
  • Every tool invocation is shown inline in your chat as a tappable pill — tap to see parameters, results, and citations.
  • If a tool fails, the AI continues with a graceful fallback and shows the error inline.

When Claude wants to take action, it produces an action card — a structured preview you review before anything is sent or created. Messaging cards open a recipient picker; OS cards execute with a single tap.

How it works

  • Claude generates a card based on your request — you see a full preview before any action is taken.
  • Messaging cards open a multi-select recipient picker. Send to one chat or fan out to many at once.
  • Image, video, audio, and file cards reference attachments you provided — Claude never fabricates media.
  • Every card shows real-time status: idle, sending, sent (with recipient count), or failed with a retry option.
  • Cards persist across sessions so you can review what was sent later.

Agentic behaviour
Single-turn — one prompt, one response
Document creation
Not available
Message drafting
AI Reply suggestions within the chat thread
Context management
Throws error when context is exceeded — no automatic trimming or recovery
Languages

Context window
Up to 1,000,000 tokens (Opus/Sonnet) or 200,000 tokens (Haiku) — handles entire conversation histories
Input types
